Clanton Police Chief - Brian Stilwell

Message from the Chief
I would like to extend a warm welcome to the City of Clanton and Clanton Police Department's Website. I am appreciative of your interest not only in our beautiful city but the police department as well. The City of Clanton Police Department is entering some exciting times. Not only is the department preparing itself to be a professional police department that is growing with our community, but we are undergoing some major technology upgrades that will help reduce costs, improve efficiency, and move us toward a "greener" environment by reducing our use of paper.

Currently the Clanton Police Department is upgrading our computer Infrastructure and Records Management Software. Our current RMS is a DOS based system purchased in the late 90's that is no longer compatible with our Federal and State Reporting Requirements. Our new computer network and RMS system will move us toward a paperless environment that will meet all our reporting requirements. This new Computer Network will also expand to meet our future requirement of Mobile Data Computers.

The second phase of our technology upgrade will place Mobile Data Computers in every one of our patrol cars. These computers will allow the officers to do all their reporting in the field, issue citations electronically, and file accident reports electronically. Currently all our reports are hand written and then mailed to the state for reporting requirements. When our upgrades are complete all the reoorts will be electronically submitted from the patrol car, reducing costs by not generating printed reports, making us more efficient by allowing the officers more time in the field, reducing payroll by not having a clerk doing data entry, and allowing our officers to better prepare and present a criminal case. While the initial cost of these upgrades is substantial, the return on our investment will be great in the annual cost savings by moving to a paperless, electronic environment.

Of course, I would not be able to do any of this without the outstanding leadership of the Mayor and City Council. Their fiscal management has placed the City of Clanton in a situation where we are able to pursue technology upgrades such as this without placing an undue burden on the city or its taxpayers. I want to thank them for their leadership and extend a thank you to all our officers who do an outstanding job protecting our fine city.

I look forward to the future of the city of Clanton and the Clanton Police Department. If I can be of service to you, please do not hesitate to call my office at (205) 755-1194.

Readiness
The Clanton Police Department is a professional policing agency that is preparing itself to grow with our community. Currently the Clanton Police Department is authorized 25 sworn personnel, 3 non sworn park security officers, and one animal control officer. Our Department is divided into two divisions: Patrol Division and Detective Division.

Patrol Division: consists of 18 officers who cover the City of Clanton 24 hours per day 7 days per week. Our Patrol Officers work 8 hour shifts. The Patrol division responds to over 1,900 calls for service per month. Each shift is supervised by a Sergeant and Corporal. All of our patrol officers are assigned their own patrol car. The patrol division also has a K9 Handler who manages both a drug detection dog named 'Winnie' and a Bomb Detection Dog named 'Tiger'. Within the patrol division we have 3 part time non sworn park security officers. These officers are assigned to our city parks to provide information, security, and traffic direction at city park events.

Detective Division: General Crime Detectives who handle all felony crimes against persons and/or property, Narcotics Detectives who handle crimes involving the sale, use, trafficking, and distribution if controlled substance crimes, and the Clanton Housing Authority officers. The City of Clanton has recently added officers assigned full time to the Clanton Housing Authority. These officers are assigned to the area to patrol, work felony cases, and build relationships. Our Detectives Division receives around 150 new cases per month to investigate.

The Clanton Police Department also has the only Explorer Post in Chilton County. Our Explorers provide a valuable service to the police department by working events such as the Peach Festival, Peach Parade, The Chilton County Fair, homecoming and Christmas Parades. Our Explorers raise their own funds annually and give selflessly back to our community. They are appreciated. If you would like to become an Explorer or Auxiliary please contact Officer David Hicks 205-755-1194.

Clanton Police Officers are issued Sig Sauer P226 .40 cal handguns, M4 .223 cal rifles and a 12 Gauge Shotgun. Each officer is provided with a bullet proof vest and a uniform allowance to buy and maintain department required uniforms. All Clanton Police Officers are required to be APOSTC certified and maintain their certification by attending at least 16 CEU hours per year.

The Clanton Police Department participates in numerous events throughout each year such as the Peach Jam, Peach Festival, Peach Parade, The Chilton County Fair, and National Night Out to name a few. The Police Department is committed to providing the community with information and Chief Stilwell has addressed numerous community groups in order to help accomplish this task. If you would like Chief Stilwell or a member of his department to speak to your community group please call the office at 205-755-1194 to schedule the date.

Message from the Chief
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the official web site of the City of Clanton and the Clanton Fire Department. I hope as you browse through this site you find it very helpful and do not hesitate to contact anyone listed with any questions you may have.

The Clanton Fire Department is a progressive department of men and women dedicated to the city as well as the citizens we protect. Our goal is to save lives and property, and the scope of this endeavor is broadening on a daily basis. We have evolved from a department answering routine fire and EMS calls to a department that responds to calls for technical rescue and hazardous materials. We will continue to train and prepare ourselves for whatever emergency the future may hold.

The Clanton Fire Department is committed to public and life safety education in order to attempt to minimize injury and death. Each year the department participates in several fire prevention activities to better educate the general public, especially children. These events include the Peach Jam in June, National Night Out in August and Fire Prevention Week in October. We educate an average of 1,500 children and adults annually in fire prevention and safety.

We will continue to prepare ourselves for evolving threats to our citizens. We will accomplish this through a continued commitment to emergency services, public education and training. By doing this, we will be able to meet the broad spectrum of possible emergency needs. We look forward to serving you and the citizens of Clanton and Chilton County.

History
The Clanton Fire Department was formed and the ordinance to create a fire department for the Town of Clanton was signed and adopted on November 24, 1922 by Mayor V.J. Gragg. The fire department at that time had three hand-pulled hose wagons, one of which is currently on display at Station One, and a larger horse-pulled wagon that carried ladders and other firefighting equipment. The first fire engine was an American LaFrance and was purchased in 1927. A picture of the fire engine and members of the department at that time is also on display at Station One.
